Virgin Media Investigated By The Advertising Standards Agency
Posted on 09 November 2007 by Stuart
As our regular readers will recall around a month or so ago we wrote two articles “UK Goverment Petition: Virgin Media falsely advertising unlimited broadband and guilty of network oversubscribing” & “Virgin Media Throttles Broadband: The True Real World Usage Figures About Their Broadband Service” based around Virgin Media’s Bandwidth Throttling policy. P2PViNE decided to report Virgin Media To the Advertising Standards Agency for false Advertising Claims after the first article and today we got a reply.
Dear Sir,
YOUR COMPLAINT ABOUT VIRGIN MEDIA ADVERTISING
Thank you for your recent complaint via our website.
I can inform you that we are currently investigating Virgin Media’s advertisments following complaints that have raised similar issues to those raised by you. Unfortunatley, because the investigation is at such an advanced stage, we cannot add your complaint to the file, but we hope to publish as adjudication before too long.
Adjudications are published on our website, http://www.asa.org.uk, on Wednesdays, and i would suggest that you visit our website in order to read the adjudication.
The adjudication for Virgin Media has been published now and you can find that information here http://www.asa.org.uk/asa/adjudications/Public/TF_ADJ_43471.htm. Unfortunatley, the adjudication refers to Virgins recent squabble with Sky Broadcasting over and advertisement that Virgin ran comparing the Sky+ box with Virgin’s own Vbox receiver.
This Advertisment has nothing to do with the complaint we filed with the ASA concerning Virgin Media’s Broadband Advertising Campaign which is highly misleading in it’s wording. As you can see from the excerpt of the letter we received about the ASA claim “raised similar issues to those raised by you” the adjudication in process at the time in no way refers to Virgins Broadband Services, That was the issue we raised with the ASA.
Once again Virgin Media declined to comment on the Sky ruling or anything to do with our complaint. So what do we do next? Well we have also alerted our MP to our concerns over Virgin Media and await their reply.
The one thing the adjudication over virgin by Sky proves as that Virgin do not mind blatantly lying in their advertising campaigns for Cable TV and that trend is also present in their broadband Advertisements yet to date goes on unchallenged.
