Gears of War over Hamachi and playing games online without cd-key

Did you ever wonder if it’s possible to play a game online without a cd-key? Perhaps you lost your cd-key or it got stolen/banned. The answer is yes, for most games it is possible. Theoretically any game which has LAN support can be played over Hamachi.
Hamachi emulates a LAN (LAN over the Internet), this makes it easier for all of us to connect to each other, just by looking under LAN games of a game we can see who is hosting a game. With Hamachi you can also chat with people (you play with) and arrange multiple computers into their own secure network, just as if they were connected by a physical cable. This tutorial is not only about getting GoW running but explains in general how to play any other LAN enabled game.
Okay, now that you know the essence, there are 2 easy steps before you start playing a game online over Hamachi.
First you will need to join an exciting network so it’s assumed you already installed the Hamachi client from here.
To join a network you will first need to know who is running one. Planethamachi is the most used site for such purpose and you just need to enter the name of the game (Gears of War) you want to join and a list of public networks will show up.
Now, on the right side you will see a join button to join a network. If it’s full/does not exist or you get some other error then just pick another one until you see a network appear in your Hamachi client. You can also do this manually once you know the login/password of a network.
Hamachi client has 4 buttons on the bottom:
* Power Off
* Set online status
* Create or Join networks
* Configure Hamachi
Click on the Second button (Create or Join)
A new window will pop up, it will ask you for a Network name and password. Everything is CASE SENSITIVE!
Second step is to see who is hosting a game at the moment, so in most cases people will put “Hosting GoW” or similar in their name and thats what you also should do when hosting a game. Every person connected to a network displays his numeric address next to his nickname. You will need to connect to that address once you are in the LAN option of a game. For example in Gears of War when you are in the game, open the console by pressing ` usually the button above TAB and type:
open “hosts address”
Where “hosts address” will be replaced by the hosting players Hamachi address.
For example:
open 5.113.22.123
Finally, to play Gears of War online using Hamachi you need a client fix that will bypass the maximum of 30ms ping for LAN games.

Make backups of the original files in your GoW install folder that this fix will replace.
(note: this fix will remove any of your old profiles, such as your saved campaign, keyboard configuration, and you are only allowed to use one player profile per machine)
Also install this registry file to force GoW to use the Hamachi adapter instead of your internet adapter:

After you replaced the file, you will be named Player1 and to change that you need to follow the instructions from here.
Do not patch GoW because the fix is not made for it (yet).

Hello. After doing all this my friend and I can play the game over LAN properly.. we have legit copies but the Live service refused to accept my 1 month trial key for Gold from the card in the box.. so we went this route
HOWEVER is there a reason why text chat ( by opening the console with ~ and typing say whatever whateveR) isnt working? I mean I see it when I type it, but my friend doesnt.. and I dont see his. I can’t find any information! I’m so frustrated..

wahabwajahat – it’s not an exe it’s a reg file, what you have to do is just save the file as *.reg and double click on it, widnows will run it and ask you if you want to load it, click “yes” and that should do it.

Anyone had any luck with getting checkpoints to work? When I try to continue a game where we’ve completed the first few checkpoints, it loads back at the start.

jobabob, and anyone else having a problem with deleting checkpoints:
before you start up gears of war, simply unplug your internet cable.
after you’ve finished playing and the program closes, plug your internet back in.
this works because Live deletes your saves when the program is running. i’m guessing that ms wanted it that way because if the program did it locally, you could just fix the exe. frightfully simple solution to their alternative, though.

I hate to state the obvious here, but surely that means playing over hamachi is impossible then as it’ll disconnect you from the other player! Unless you literally mean when loading up the game, if so I suppose I could just tell my firewall to block Live contacting MS.

I cannot stand idiots who post these tutorials with incorrect adn unfollowable information
I installed Hamachi—– too bad youc annot connect on line with it this tutorial sucks it explains nothing at all. it’s missing so much shit it’s not even funny—Sorry no one has played gears of war or anything else using this software
Now someone needs to explain a very detailed step by step process on what I do once I launch it. All i see is some IP address at teh top
I can click onto create or join networks and then So I go to join

I typed Planethamachi on the network name line just as the tutorial says above however the totria; doesn’t post the passowrd so this is obsolete
I then tried typing in gears of war just as the tutiral says to and guess what–The tutorial still hasn’t said what the passwords for these are.
This software is useless cinse everything that is needed to run it is never ever given.

Post a step by stpe very explicitly detailed picture tutorial showing everything that is being entered in and where and what exactly is being enteered in on each line and if it’s on a password then you say what it is.

can i know which version of gear of war you guys using??1.0 or 1.1??because when i overwrite the files jst like it said in the instruction..i cant start my startup.exe.. it says have encountered a problem and must be close. SEnd or dont send report.. anyone have any idea how to get it working??I also tried to get crack from gameburnworld and gamecopyworld.com for version 1.0..still it crashed.. thanks for the help i cant wait to play with frens!

I don’t know how to join a game!! I have done everything i could find but when i wrote the host ip in the game console, nothing hapends. And after a while a message comes up “you have lost the connection to the host” and I try to search for a lan match but I never find any, and I have made the the hamachi connection the higest priored one! and it’s still not working

remove WarEngineUserSettings.ini and start the game
your video settings should be reset and you can also tweak the file and set it to read only so it doesn’t get changed when the game is started

Ya I have the same problem as you.
When I bring up the console in-game and type open “host ip” nothing happens.
Then after about 2 minutes, I see the loading screen.
I guess thats a good sign but then right away it says your connection with the host has been lost.
My friend and I looked it up for several hours, in different search engines, and such, but no solution/fix was provided.
Please help =/

Yo man. I have a problem with the 30ms ping fix, the one that replaces the G4Wlive file. Once ive extracted and replaced the files, i click on it and it says use startup.exe instead. so i click on startup.exe, it comes up with the loading screen, the 1 where you press ‘play’. I press play, it closes and nothing happens. Now i cant even launch GoW, nevermind play online. Can anyone see the problem? Ta

i had the same prob like faisal, after applying the fix, the game runs slow… even if i change the video setting like make it lower, still seems not working at all.. i hav deleted the warengineusersettings.ini to reset, but still…

You can’t say every single person that cannot get this to work that followeed the tutorial and all had the same exact problem, that i’ts thier fault, this is clearly the person who wrote the tutporials fault and if you know how this works and you decided to post it anyway without checking to see if the tutorial works (Which it obviously doesn’t) then you are just as at fault for this problem as the person who wrote the tutorial. When you test something you give it to someone that does not have any knowledge about it.
Your dumb and you shouldn’t be allowed to post things that do not work. And right now over 10 people in this cnanot get this to work.
Fix your tutorial the way WE NEED IT DONE NOT YOUR WAY OF SEEING THINGS BECAUSE YOUR WAY DOESN”T WORK!

guys, if you cant connect using the console command…
you have to set your hamachi as the primary network adaptor.. for windows xp you can access this on the network connections > advanced > advanced settings.. and for vista open up network and sharing center> manage network connections > advanced > advance settings.. if you cant find the advanced tab in windows vista, make sure you press the alt key in you keyboard for the advanced tab to show up.. good luck!

Hi,
I’m having a problem with the registry file, I can’t install it. I double click the file and then it asks me if I really want to add it to the registry and I click “Yes” but then I get this message saying something like:
“Impossible to import C:\Users\ [whatever the location is] \gears_hamachi_fix.reg: The specified file isn’t a registry script. You can only import binary registry files through the registry editor.”
Well, so I open the registry editor and try to import the file from there but I get the same message (without the “You can only import binary registry files through the registry editor.”).
Does anyone know what’s up with this?
